The Human Cost of Inaction
New York is bleeding, and the mayor won’t stop the flow. While Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council members play politics, regular folks are getting crushed by speeding e-bikes. Last week’s hearing was a total disaster, with officials burning hours in nonsense debates before skipping out on the public. They ignored the terrified parents and victims who came to tell their stories of pain.
Look at what happened to Tonette Rivera. An e-bike hit her when she was 20 weeks pregnant. She spent two months in the hospital, her baby was born early, and the infant spent three months in the neonatal ICU. That’s not just a statistic; that’s a family destroyed. The financial ruin that followed was just another blow to a mother already in hell.
Then there’s cellist Pamela Manasse. Her career ended after an accident left her right side permanently paralyzed. She even tried to raise the issue with the mayor on a call-in show, but he dodged her. We are talking about 133 dead New Yorkers since 2019, plus over 17,000 injured. This isn’t a traffic problem; it’s a crisis.
Why the City Won’t Act
So why won’t the mayor crack down? The reporting from the New York Post suggests it’s because so many of these riders are illegal immigrants. Progressives in City Hall seem terrified that enforcing the law will make it easier for federal authorities to detain and deport them. Instead of protecting pedestrians, they are protecting a specific group of riders.
That is why the mayor instructed the NYPD to stop enforcing e-bike laws. It’s a choice between public safety and political ideology. Councilman Shaun Abreu tries to blame corporate greed from Amazon and DoorDash, but that’s a dodge. The bikes are the weapons, and the riders are the ones breaking the law.
We saw a similar debate with horse-drawn carriages. When a death happened there, the outcry was immediate, and the industry faced a ban. Yet, progressives, including those running the Central Park Conservancy, refuse to even call for a ban on e-bikes in the parks. It’s hypocrisy, plain and simple.
The Take: Safety Over Politics
This administration is failing New Yorkers. You cannot tell a grieving mother that her husband’s death in Central Park is just a side effect of a policy debate. One reader wrote in to the Post noting that while cars used to drive in the park, they at least stopped for traffic lights. Now, bikers and e-bikers rule the road, speeding and ignoring walkers.
People are literally putting their lives in the hands of reckless riders just to cross a street. We see bikes on pathways, riders smoking weed, and littering everywhere. Something has to be done, and the mayor’s silence is deafening. As one letter writer put it regarding a recent tragedy, “Bike strike kills dad in Cent. Pk.”
Mamdani needs to stop hiding behind the excuse of immigration status. If you break the law, you face the consequences. Period. We don’t need more “mindless back-and-forth” at the City Council. We need enforcement. We need the police to do their jobs and stop these deadly machines from maiming our neighbors.
The city is already paying the price in medical bills and funeral costs. Every day the mayor delays, more families are devastated. This is about common sense. If you can’t ride safely, you don’t ride. It’s that simple, and it’s time the mayor stopped acting like it’s too complicated to fix.
