Islanders fans got a glimmer of hope on Wednesday morning. Mathew Barzal finally took the ice with his teammates for the first time this season, though he wore a red no-contact sweater. The star center has been sidelined since training camp, but seeing him back on the rink is a massive step forward for a roster that needs every hand.

Despite the positive visual, don’t expect him to drop the gloves anytime soon. Barzal practiced alongside defensemen Ryan Pulock and forward Matias Maccelli, who were also in non-contact jerseys. All three players left the ice before the contact portion of the session even began, signaling that the team is still being extremely cautious.

The Injury Timeline Remains Murky

Barzal missed all of training camp and the team’s first 14 games due to inflammation in his left knee. Confusion surrounds his precise medical timeline, as some reports claim surgery occurred two years ago while others state the knee was first hurt during the 2024-25 campaign. Regardless of the timeline, the goal is to get his 72-point machine back in the lineup after he led the Isles in scoring last season.

General manager Mathieu Darche has made it clear that the final decision rests with the player himself. Back on Oct. 22, Darche told reporters, according to amNewYork, “We’re communicating with him every day.” He later elaborated on the process, noting that Barzal is the only one who truly knows how his body feels.

“He’s letting us know because nobody else can know how he feels,” Darche said. “So he’s letting us know how he feels, and we progress like that… The doctors would be comfortable for him to ramp up whenever he’s ready.”

This isn’t a return yet, but it is progress. Following a shutdown immediately prior to the season kickoff, Barzal has been skating alone for the past several weeks. The fact that he is now joining the full practice session, even in a limited capacity, suggests the inflammation is under control. However, the lack of a definitive timetable means fans should manage their expectations. The team isn’t going to rush a franchise cornerstone back just to fill a roster spot.

The Islanders are shorthanded, and every day without Barzal is a day the team struggles to find its rhythm. His 19 goals and 72 points last season were crucial to their success, and his absence has been felt. While Pulock and Maccelli also practiced, the spotlight remains on Barzal because he is the engine of this offense. Until he can play without restrictions, the Isles will have to rely on their depth players to keep things competitive.

When Will We Know More?

There is no specific date set for Barzal’s full return to game action. The team will continue to monitor his daily feedback and medical clearance. As Darche noted, the doctors are comfortable for him to ramp up whenever he is ready, but the ultimate call comes down to Barzal’s comfort level.
