A Vanity Project for the Ages

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is pushing a wild idea that screams out of touch with reality. He wants Congress to force Amtrak to rename New York Penn Station as part of a massive $8 billion makeover. This isn’t about fixing the mess for commuters; it feels like a political stunt for President Trump. While New Yorkers are stuck in the dark, crowded mess of the current station, the administration is dreaming up a new name instead of just fixing the lights.

The Facts on the Table

Duffy sent a letter to Senate committee leaders on Wednesday, urging them to include a directive to rename the hub when reauthorizing surface transportation funding. The current funding expires on September 30, and Duffy sees this as a unique chance to transform the station into a “brand-new, world-class station.” He didn’t specify the new name in the letter, but he has previously told reporters that “Trump Station… has a nice ring to it.” The proposal also includes a request for an additional $1 billion grant to fund the revamp.

Retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler, whose district covers the station, slammed the move immediately. He called the proposal “ridiculous” and accused the Trump administration of a “hostile takeover.” Nadler took to X to write that this is just the administration delivering “Trump his dream of renaming Penn Station after himself.” He further labeled the rebuild a “Trump vanity project” and demanded answers on how it will be paid for, noting the administration has not disclosed who will foot the bill.

Opinion: Put the Money First

New York doesn’t need a new name; it needs a working station. We’ve been hearing promises for decades that Penn Station will be fixed, yet we still stand in cramped corridors. Now, Sean Duffy is trying to turn an $8 billion infrastructure project into a giant billboard for the President. It’s a distraction from the real issues. We don’t care what the station is called if we can’t get to our jobs on time. This feels like a classic case of prioritizing ego over the people who actually use the trains.

Rep. Nadler is right to call this out. When you ask for billions of dollars without a clear plan on who pays, you’re just playing games. The taxpayers are the ones on the hook here. If the administration can’t tell us where the money comes from, they shouldn’t be dictating the signage. A “world-class station” means reliable service, not a fancy nameplate above a ticket booth that’s still going to be overcrowded. This is about political branding, and it’s insulting to the daily grind of millions of New Yorkers.

We love this city, but we’re tired of watching it get run around by people with big ideas and no answers. If the goal is to honor the President, fine, but don’t hold up the funding or the construction. Fix the station first, then talk about the name. Until then, this looks like a waste of time and money that could be better spent on making the trains run on time.

What to watch is whether Congress actually bites on this request. If they pass the funding without the name change, that’s a win for common sense. If they do include it, New Yorkers should ask their representatives exactly how this funding is going to be paid for without raising our taxes. We’ll be watching closely.
