A Night of Horror in New York Harbor

New York Harbor turned into a nightmare on Saturday night when a 21-foot charter boat capsized near the Statue of Liberty. The vessel, carrying 14 people instead of its safe limit of ten, flipped over and left a grieving family in its wake. Two innocent lives were lost in the water: 27-year-old Sara Sanchez and her 5-month-old daughter, Antonella Garcia.

Survivor Jorge Ortiz, 58, is now speaking out about the chaos he witnessed. He says the captain, Manuel Hernandez, made a fatal error by ignoring the weight limit.

The Captain Who Stayed Dry

While passengers struggled in the cold water, the captain allegedly remained on the boat.

The boarding process itself raised red flags for those on board. S. Army Corps of Engineers crane on Sunday, August 9, 2026, as the investigation continues.

Our Take: Greed Over Safety

Let’s be clear: charging $150 a head does not give anyone the right to stuff a boat with people it can’t handle. This captain chose profit over the safety of 14 passengers, including a baby. When you see a boat that small and put 14 souls on it, you are playing Russian Roulette with lives. The fact that the captain allegedly told passengers they didn’t need life jackets shows a complete disregard for basic maritime safety.

We are sick of seeing this kind of negligence in our city. The response from the rescue teams was heroic, involving two Coast Guard boats, four FDNY boats, and an NYPD helicopter. But no amount of rescue effort can bring back a baby or a mother. The community has rallied around Andres Garcia, the husband and father, and their 6-year-old son, Salvador.

This tragedy exposes a broken system where unregulated charters can operate with little oversight. We need stricter enforcement before more families are torn apart. The captain must face the full weight of the law for his actions.

As the legal process moves forward, the Southern District of New York will handle the criminal charges against Manuel Hernandez. The community fundraiser for the surviving Garcia family continues to operate as neighbors step up to help. The overturned vessel has been removed, but the emotional scars on this family and our city will last much longer.
