A Violent Attack on a Shabbat Service
New York City is supposed to be safe, but a violent attack at Central Synagogue proves we still have work to do. Larry Montes, a 46-year-old Bronx man, walked into a Shabbat service and turned it into a nightmare. He didn’t just disrupt the peace; he physically assaulted people and yelled hateful slurs while they were trying to worship. This isn’t just a crime; it’s an assault on the very idea of religious freedom in our city.
According to ABC News, police called this a “random antisemitic attack” that happened right in the heart of Manhattan. The details are sickening. Montes stood up during the service, shouted “I am Hashem,” and then knocked over candles. He didn’t stop there. He struck a 63-year-old woman, cutting her lip, and headbutted a security guard. It was a brutal, unprovoked assault on innocent people just trying to spend their Friday night with God.
Federal Charges and a Chilling Confession
Now, the stakes are higher because federal prosecutors have stepped in. On Tuesday, a complaint was filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York against Montes, alleging two counts of hate crimes plus one count of damaging religious property resulting in injury. This isn’t a local misdemeanor; he’s facing up to 10 years in prison for each hate crime charge.
What makes this case so disturbing is what Montes told cops after he got arrested. He didn’t hide his motives. According to the federal complaint, Montes admitted his actions were “all religious motivated” and stated that “it’s all a racial thing”. The Justice Department says he also screamed “f— the Jews. … It’s racial” during his arrest. He even told security he planned to come back to the synagogue, showing he had no remorse for what he did.
Why This Matters for Every New Yorker
We love this city, but we can’t let antisemitism take root here. When a man walks into a house of worship and attacks people based on their faith, he attacks all of us. “An attack on a house of worship is an attack on the fundamental right to practice one’s faith safely,” stated Jamie McDonald, the US attorney for the Southern District of New York, perfectly.
Montes’ actions show a dangerous mindset that needs to be crushed. He told cops, “I will never affiliate with no filthy f, ing synagogues, either here or in f, ing Israel,” according to the NY Post Metro. This isn’t just about one guy; it’s about the safety of our Jewish community. Federal authorities must intervene to safeguard the public from antisemitic and racially motivated attacks, just as they are doing now.
As James Barnacle Jr., Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s New York Field Office, said, “Larry Montes’ targeted acts of violence on a congregant, security guard, and synagogue during a Shabbat service are deeply disturbing”. We have to take these threats seriously. Safety isn’t guaranteed; it has to be enforced.
What Happens Next
Montes is currently being held on $10,000 bail following his appearance in court. According to the Department of Justice, he remains in state custody yet a later appearance in Manhattan federal court is anticipated for him. That upcoming federal hearing will determine if he stays locked up while the case moves forward. New Yorkers are watching to see if justice is served.
