City Marshals Rack Up 647 Speeding Tickets While Wearing Badges

Brooklyn Family Fumes As Sanitation Driver Gets Light Charge

A Brooklyn family demands justice after a sanitation driver killed a 30-year-old woman with only misdemeanor charges and a desk appearance ticket issued.

New York City just handed out a massive wake-up call to its own law enforcement. City marshals, the private citizens the mayor appoints to enforce court judgments, are driving like maniacs. Since 2020, documentation indicates these officers have accumulated 102 red-light tickets alongside 647 speed-camera infractions. It is a scandal that the people supposed to uphold the law are breaking it at such a dangerous rate.

Streetsblog NYC obtained a list of 30 marshals with parking placards and found that all but one have been caught speeding by cameras. This isn’t just a few bad apples. Twelve of these officials, or 40 percent, have received at least 10 school-zone speeding tickets. We are talking about drivers who endanger children and families while wearing the authority of the city on their badges.

The Worst Offenders Among Us

Two specific marshals stand out for their reckless behavior. One driver, with the license plate LEG6496, has collected 125 speeding tickets and 13 red-light tickets since 2023. Their driving has only gotten worse, as they received 68 speed-camera tickets and 10 red-light tickets between July 2025 and June 2026 alone. Another marshal, driving a car with plate W857KP, has accumulated 132 speeding tickets and 13 red-light tickets since 2014. Since January 2025, this driver has added 19 more tickets to their record. Both have racked up enough violations in a single year to be classified as “super speeders” under New York State law.

State regulations mandate that such drivers will shortly need to equip their vehicles with speed-limiting devices. But why wait for a new rule to fix a problem that has been festering for years? These marshals are supposed to be the good guys. Instead, they are turning city streets into danger zones.

Council Member Santosuosso Speaks Out

City officials are finally pushing back against this culture of impunity. Council Member Kayla Santosuosso (D-Bay Ridge) made her stance clear to the press. “No one is above the law,” she said. “The most reckless drivers must be reined in, no matter who they work for or what they do.” Her words hit the nail on the head. If a regular New Yorker did this, they would be in jail or have their license revoked long ago.

The Department of Investigation is now looking into these violations. We need to know why these placards are being issued in the first place. A marshal with 125 speeding tickets should not be allowed to drive a city vehicle. The system is broken, and it is putting everyday New Yorkers at risk every time these officers hit the road.

This situation exposes a double standard that we in New York simply cannot accept. We see regular drivers get hammered for a single speeding ticket, yet these marshals get a pass. They are private citizens appointed by the mayor, yet they act like they own the road. This behavior erodes trust in our entire justice system. When the enforcers are the ones breaking the rules, the law loses its power.

We are a city that values safety and order. We do not want our streets patrolled by people who treat speed limits as suggestions. The RapForMayor team demands that the mayor and the Department of Investigation get tough on these violations immediately. No more excuses, no more delays.

The RapForMayor team is watching this closely. We expect the Department of Investigation to release its findings and for the city to revoke the privileges of these reckless drivers.

This is opinion and commentary from the RapForMayor team.
