The Hostile Takeover Is Already Here

Forget the idea that the left is just shifting slightly. The Democratic Socialists of America are actively engineering a hostile takeover of the Democratic Party, and they are winning. From New York City to Colorado, they are knocking off incumbents and setting a new, radical agenda. This isn’t just political theater; it’s a fundamental shift that threatens the stability and safety of New York.

According to reporting from Reason Magazine, the DSA engineered primary victories for three candidates in New York’s recent congressional races. In Colorado’s 1st congressional district, a 30-year incumbent was defeated just seven days later by DSA-backed Melat Kiros. The momentum is real, and the establishment is scrambling to figure out how to stop it. During a New York victory celebration for Zohran Mamdani, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries showed up on a screen, where chants of “You’re next, you’re next, you’re next” greeted him, indicating the old guard is now the target.

Establishment Democrats Are Divided

The reaction from the party leadership is a mix of forced acceptance and genuine alarm. Some are trying to paint this as a healthy expansion. Rep. Johnny Olszewski (D–Md.told CNN, “I can disagree with some of the positions or statements of some of the incoming members of Congress but still welcome them. We are a big tent party.” Sen. Chris Murphy (D–Conn.

But others see the writing on the wall. Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D–N.J.) argues that “socialists aren’t Democrats. They’re socialists.” Rep. Adam Smith (D–Wash.warns that a “dangerous” agenda is effectively “expressing support for communism…for open borders, defunding the police” Even Sen. John Fetterman (D–Pa. Meanwhile, DSA National Political Committee member David Jenkins declared that “our goal is communism,” while member Hazel Williams argued that “U.S. imperialism is not a thing that can b” [cut off].

Why This Matters for New York

We love New York, but we won’t stand for policies that destroy it. The Townhall reporting highlights how Democrats have already moved toward government price-setting regimes on prescription drugs through the Inflation Reduction Act. They assert the CBO predicted merely one lost drug this decade, whereas the legislation has already ended 56 research programs and caused 26 drugs to be discontinued. This is the kind of “big idea” the socialists want to expand. If they take full control, they will double down on single-payer healthcare and open borders, ignoring the cost to taxpayers and the strain on our cities.

This isn’t about being “timid” like Sen. Murphy suggests. It’s about common sense. When the goal is explicitly communism, as Jenkins admitted, you cannot just welcome them into the tent and hope they change their minds. They want to change the entire system. For New Yorkers, this means higher taxes, less safety, and a government that prioritizes ideology over the people who actually live here. We need a party that protects our streets and our businesses, not one that wants to dismantle them.

The Next Move

The battle lines are drawn, and the next major test will come in the upcoming election cycles where these DSA-backed candidates face off against establishment incumbents. The stakes are too high to ignore. If the party doesn’t push back now, New York will be left holding the bag for policies that have failed everywhere else they’ve been tried.
