New Yorkers are reeling after a brutal attack left a 28-year-old woman fighting for her life on a familiar running path. Katie Suarez was stabbed in the neck while jogging near Bath Beach and is now on life support. The NYPD is scrambling for leads as the city grapples with another senseless act of violence in our parks and promenades.
This wasn’t a robbery or a targeted hit; it was a random act of savagery that shook a family to its core. Suarez was doing her usual evening routine when she was attacked, leaving her parents to find her unconscious and bleeding. Now, the whole city is asking how a woman can be safe while just trying to get some exercise.
A Random Attack on a Camera-Free Path
According to reporting from Gothamist, Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told reporters that no arrests have been made yet. “As of right now, it appears it was a random attack,” Kenny said. The timing was too precise to be anything else, and the location offered zero protection. Surveillance cameras do not cover the running and biking track stretch where Suarez was attacked.
Details from the New York Post reveal the heartbreaking timeline of that Friday evening. Suarez left her job at a TD Bank in Caesar’s Bay Shopping Center around 6:35 p.m. and met her mother before heading out for a run. Her father had just left work too, planning to meet them at a Wendy’s to give them a ride home. He called Suarez around 7:56 p.m. to check on her, and she said she was half a mile away and would arrive soon.
At 8:16 p.m., just 20 minutes later, her father found her unconscious and bleeding from the neck beneath a tree. The NYPD confirmed in a statement that she “sustained multiple stab wounds to the neck” during the attack around 8 p.m. Officers are now attempting to obtain footage from a food cart near the scene while requesting Belt Parkway drivers to review their dashcams.
Why Safety Matters More Than Ever
Here is the hard truth: our streets are becoming dangerous places for people just trying to live their lives. Suarez received two neck stabs from an unknown assailant, one on each side. Investigators are ruling out robbery because she was found with her jewelry and pink cell phone still on her. There is also no indication of a sexual assault, which makes the motive even more baffling and terrifying.
Chief Kenny explained the randomness of the crime by noting that “Nobody else would’ve known that she was running there at that particular time.” She was doing her usual routine, and that predictability is what made her a target. This isn’t just a crime story; it’s a failure of public safety. When you can’t run without fear of being stabbed, something is deeply broken in how we protect our neighborhoods.
The NYPD has deployed K-9 units, scuba teams, and drones to scour the area for clues. They are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. We need answers, and we need them fast. This family has lost their daughter to violence, and the community deserves to know who did this and why.
On Friday between 7:56 p.m. and 8:12 p.m., police are urgently looking for witnesses who observed Suarez jogging along the Belt Parkway. If you have any dashcam footage or saw anything suspicious, you need to contact the NYPD immediately. The investigation is ongoing, and every second counts in catching a killer.
