Mamdani Charter Wins Slash Public Voice, Speed Up Permits

NYC voters backed all five of Mayor Mamdani's charter changes to cut red tape, but critics warn the moves silence community boards and block public participation.

Business groups are screaming for the City Council to stop a radical labor bill that Mayor Zohran Mamdani is pushing hard. They warn this “Delivery Protection Act” will slap crippling mandates on the very companies that keep New York moving.

The proposal, sponsored by Council Member Tiffany Cabán and backed by the mayor’s progressive allies, targets the gig economy hard. It bans third-party contractors and forces companies to hire every worker directly or face a massive $500,000 penalty for each non-employee. Due to this threat, Amazon has warned it will close over a dozen warehouses and relocate thousands of employees from the city.

The Bill’s Hidden Costs

The opposition letter argues these rules punish businesses without fixing real safety issues. “These requirements would impose substantial costs on businesses while doing little to address the underlying safety concerns the legislation purports to solve,” the letter said, according to the New York Post. The math is simple and scary for any company trying to operate here. If a business can’t afford the bond or the hiring mandate, they leave.

Ironically, the law meant to hold big corporations accountable might actually crush competition. The coalition wrote, “Ironically, legislation intended to hold large corporations accountable could therefore make the market more concentrated by pushing independent operators out of it.” Small operators can’t handle these new costs, so only the biggest players might survive, or they might all just pack up and move to New Jersey.

This is exactly the kind of left-wing overreach that kills New York. When you put a $500,000 bond on every gig worker, you aren’t protecting workers; you are firing them. The correspondence highlights that 38% of all US workers rely on temporary jobs for income, noting that this legislation endangers those livelihoods.

Mayor Mamdani claims he wants to help, but his actions suggest he wants to punish the private sector. If he signs this, he becomes the mayor who told businesses to get out. New Yorkers need to ask why anyone would support a policy that threatens to eliminate thousands of jobs in a city that can’t afford to lose them. The consequences are too real to ignore.

The ball is now in City Council Speaker Julie Menin’s court. Business groups are demanding she block the bill before it moves forward. The letter was sent on Tuesday, and the pressure is mounting on the Democratic-led council to listen to the warnings. If the bill passes, we could see immediate closures and job losses across all five boroughs.
