A 30-year-old woman lost her life Wednesday night when a city garbage truck ran her down at one of Brooklyn’s most dangerous corners. Siobhan Lynch was crossing Bay Parkway near Bensonhurst Park when the sanitation vehicle turned right and hit her. The crash happened just after sunset, a time when visibility drops and traffic deaths spike.
The driver, a 41-year-old man, stayed at the scene but faces no charges yet as the NYPD investigates. Lynch’s sister is furious, calling for the driver to go to jail and accusing him of being distracted. This tragedy hits hard in a neighborhood that has seen far too many crashes at this specific spot.
A Known Danger Zone
Cropsey Avenue and Bay Parkway is a notorious intersection that feeds directly into the Belt Parkway. It is a place where impatient drivers speed up on wide, two-way roads. The numbers show this is a disaster waiting to happen. In 2025 alone, there were 30 reported crashes at this single intersection, injuring 21 people.
Since 2021, the total has climbed to at least 106 reported crashes. According to city statistics, 77 individuals suffered injuries from these accidents, with 18 pedestrians and three cyclists among them. Streetsblog NYC reported on these figures, highlighting how this spot has become a death trap for anyone walking or biking nearby. The city has not immediately provided statistics on how often its own sanitation drivers crash.
Family Demands Answers
The victim’s sister took to social media to scream for accountability. She posted a bitter comment on a local news story, saying, “I NEED JUSTICE FOR MY SISTER SIOBHAN!” She questioned how a driver could miss a person if their eyes were on the road. she wrote.
She vowed to fight the driver and his legal team, stating, “I’m not going to rest! … Fine sir be prepared for your best lawyers because I’m coming for you with all of mine!” While the investigation continues, the family feels the driver should be held responsible immediately. Police say the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed against the man.
The City’s Response
Department of Sanitation spokesperson Joshua Goodman addressed the tragedy in an email to Gothamist. He said, “This is a terrible tragedy, and our thoughts are with the family of the victim.” He added that “DSNY is assisting NYPD with their ongoing investigation.” The agency has not released details on the driver’s record or the truck’s maintenance history.
With daylight saving time concluding in just a few days, this crash occurs as sunset will shift an hour earlier. Thursday marks the anticipated start of the Dusk and Darkness campaign by the Mamdani administration.
