Tragedy Hits the East Village
Our city lost a bright light this past Friday night. Daria Serkov, just 15 years old, was killed in a horrific collision in the East Village. A commercial truck struck the Citi Bike she was riding with a younger friend, leaving a family shattered and a community reeling. We’re sick of watching kids get crushed by heavy metal in our neighborhoods. The scene was chaotic, with blood on the pavement and bystanders screaming in terror as they tried to help. It was a preventable nightmare unfolding on a busy street.
What The Eyewitnesses Saw
According to reporting from amNewYork and the New York Post, the crash happened around 9 p.m. on September 18 at the intersection of East 14th Street and First Avenue. Daria was operating the bike while a 13-year-old passenger rode along as they traveled westbound, outside the designated bike lane. When the collision happened, a 57-year-old man operating a Peterbilt commercial truck was turning onto First Avenue. amNewYork quoted Shaha as saying the truck turned right onto 1st Ave before striking them. Another witness described the horror, noting two bystanders attempted to extract the girl on the right side from under the wheel. Police then arrived and instructed them to halt, warning that further injury to her might occur.
First responders rushed to the scene, but the injuries were too severe. The New York Post reported a witness saw fire department personnel performing CPR on the girl. Then the cops told everyone to walk away. Daria was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital, while her friend was listed in stable condition after suffering a leg injury. The driver remained at the scene, visibly distraught, and was not charged as of Saturday morning. NYPD’s District Collision Investigation Squad is currently looking into the crash, but no arrests have been made yet.
Our City Needs Safer Streets
This tragedy hits hard because it highlights a deadly flaw in how our streets are designed and used. Large trucks turning right while bikes are moving straight is a recipe for disaster that we see too often. A witness summed up the frustration perfectly, sighing, “This could be prevented a hundred times.” We love our kids, and we love our city, but we can’t accept this kind of loss. While the driver is cooperating, the real issue is the infrastructure that allows these collisions to happen. We need better separation between bikes and heavy vehicles, and we need stricter enforcement for everyone.
It is heartbreaking to think about Daria’s family going through this. A witness expressed shared grief, stating it was sad and sorry for the little girl and her family to see her pass away in this tragic way. We stand with them in their grief and demand answers. The NYPD investigation is ongoing, and the public is waiting for results. Until the District Collision Investigation Squad finishes its work, no charges will be filed. We will be watching closely to see if the city takes real action to prevent another tragedy like this one.
