A 14-year-old boy is fighting for his life after falling from the roof of a moving train in Brooklyn. Police say the teen was riding atop a northbound J/M line train when he tumbled off around 3:40 p.m. on Monday. Just as the train arrived at the Hewes Street station in Williamsburg, he landed on the middle track.

Emergency crews rushed the teenager across the East River to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan. Authorities confirm he is in critical condition. This latest scare comes after another 14-year-old boy died on the same line just this past May while surfing near the Williamsburg Bridge.

A Deadly Trend Fueled by Social Media

This isn’t an isolated mistake; it’s a dangerous game played for likes. The J, M, and Z lines are mostly elevated and outdoor tracks, making them easy targets for daredevils. This exposure also offers a sweeping background for filming subway surfing videos that have driven this trend in recent years. We witnessed this previously with Zemfira Mukhtarov, 12, and Ebba Morina, 13, who died while riding atop a Brooklyn-bound J train last October.

Nataliya Rudenko, Mukhtarov’s mother, informed The Post that her daughter’s death devastated her, noting the girl had shared thrill-seeking adventures on TikTok. These kids aren’t just taking risks; they are chasing clout while risking their lives. The city has tried to stop them. In 2023, the MTA and the administration of former Mayor Eric Adams initiated a public service announcement campaign.

The campaign uses the voices of teenagers to warn their peers, with the slogan, according to amNewYork, “Subway Surfing Kills – Ride Inside, Stay Alive.” The NYPD has also deployed drones to spot surfers and make arrests. They have made over 200 arrests since launching their crackdown in 2023, yet kids keep climbing aboard.

Why We Need to Stop This Now

It is infuriating to watch young people treat the subway like a stunt park. The MTA press office referred questions to the NYPD, but the message needs to be louder. We have a system that is working against itself. The city spends millions on ads and drones, but the social media platforms that glorify these stunts remain silent.

When a kid falls, it’s not just a headline; it’s a family destroyed. The fact that this boy is alive is a miracle, but the odds are against him. We need to hold parents accountable and demand that social media companies stop pushing this content. If you see a video of a kid on a train roof, do not share it. Report it. Every view fuels the next attempt.

There are no arrests yet in this case, and the investigation is ongoing. But the pattern is clear. We have seen too many funerals for this kind of stupidity. It is time to stop treating this as a rite of passage and start treating it as the crime it is. The city cannot keep losing kids to a trend that should have died years ago.
