The political winds shifted Tuesday night in a way that changes everything for New York. Democrats are projected to win back control of the U.S. House of Representatives, clearing the path for Brooklyn’s own Hakeem Jeffries to make history. This isn’t just a party victory; it’s a direct challenge to the second Trump presidency starting in January.

Rep. Jeffries, 56, faces a formal vote to secure the speakership, but the momentum is undeniable. For the upcoming two years, Republican Speaker Mike Johnson will be succeeded by him, making him one of Washington’s most influential leaders. The stakes are high as the new Congress convenes, with Jeffries representing districts from Bedford-Stuyvesant to Coney Island.

A Historic Shift in Power

Unofficial data released by the city Board of Elections shows Jeffries secured his own seat with 79.3% of the vote. His path to the speakership was paved by support from local heavyweights, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who rallied to fend off primary challenges last year. This unity is critical as the party prepares to confront a hostile White House.

amNewYork reporting indicates this anticipated win positions the Brooklyn congressman to serve as the chamber’s first Black speaker in history. The win signals a massive blue wave that could reshape the legislative picture during the final years of the Trump administration.

The Agenda for the Next 100 Days

Plans for the initial 100 days of a House under Democratic control have already been established by Jeffries. He intends to act immediately on reversing Republican Medicaid cuts and extending expired Affordable Care Act tax credits.

In an October 14 interview on MS NOW, Jeffries made his priorities clear on the affordability front. “We’re going to relentlessly focus on our affordability agenda,” Jeffries said. This focus comes as New Yorkers struggle with the cost of living under the current federal pressure.

Legal Battles and Constitutional Guardrails

With the opposition party in control of the House, the legal and constitutional battles will be fierce. Jeffries has promised to handle the scrutiny with strict adherence to the rules. He told amNewYork, “We’re going to follow the facts, apply the law, be guided by the Constitution and then let the chips fall where they may, without fear or favor relative to anyone,” Jeffries said.
