The 2026 midterm elections just delivered a massive shock to the White House. Democrats won, sweeping the House, Senate, and governorships in a blue tsunami that voters say is a direct rebuke of President Trump’s policies. The new majority is already making it clear they have no patience for the current administration’s agenda.

Michigan Sen.-elect Abdul El-Sayed gave a victory speech that felt less like a celebration and more like a declaration of war. He sarcastically called Vice President JD Vance “habibi” and mocked the idea that the VP would have to “eat crow” when sworn in. The tone was set immediately, with the incoming leadership signaling they intend to use their power to dismantle key Republican initiatives.

A Vow to Dismantle ICE

The most alarming signal came from Minnesota Sen.-elect Peggy Flanagan, who told her supporters exactly what she plans to do with the immigration enforcement agency. “We will rip ICE apart,” she said in her victory speech. This is more than rhetoric; it is a legislative roadmap that threatens to upend the federal government’s ability to enforce immigration law. Rep. Jamie Raskin is already talking about impeaching Trump, while others have turned their anger toward Elon Musk, calling him a “traitor to the West.”

Some voices in the new coalition have gone even further. NYU marketing professor Scott Galloway, echoing the sentiment of many on the left, suggested Musk should be executed, stating, “We lined up the Rosenbergs against a wall.” While this is an extreme view, it highlights the volatility of the new political climate. The party has seemingly chosen to embrace this radical energy, even as it risks alienating moderate voters before the 2028 election.

Immigration Crackdown Backfires

Voters in New York and across the country are pointing to the cruelty of recent immigration enforcement as a major reason for their shift. The images from 26 Federal Plaza, where children were torn from their parents’ arms, seem to have stuck with the electorate. Peter Melck Kuttel, who works with detained immigrants, told amNewYork that these scenes played a huge role in the results.

Kuttel noted that while some voters might have supported closing the border two years ago, they drew the line at the family separations. “Many saw them as their neighbors, their friends, even employees,” Kuttel said. He observed that very few of the people he has worked with had serious criminal records, contradicting the administration’s narrative that they were targeting “the worst of the worst.”

Internal GOP Woes and Future Risks

The Republican Party’s defeat was also fueled by a lack of independence from Trump. Many candidates were so afraid of losing primaries that they followed his orders without question. Letters to the editor suggest this blind loyalty cost them seats, with one writer noting that candidates should have shown more independence to survive.

Meanwhile, the Democratic establishment is busy punishing anyone who tries to rebel. Haley Stevens faced brutal attacks after she raised concerns about antisemitism during her primary. James Carville dismissed her, saying she wasn’t even “worth a used condom.” This internal discipline might keep the party united for now, but it also signals a refusal to engage in the civil debate that often heals a fractured nation.
