A Victory for Minors and Common Sense
Finally, the federal government is drawing a line in the sand to protect our kids. The Department of Justice has settled with six major hospitals to stop performing gender transition surgeries and hormone treatments on minors. This isn’t just a bureaucratic footnote; it’s a massive step toward stopping experimental medical procedures that can cause permanent harm to children who can’t give informed consent.
Opponents of these surgeries have been screaming for this outcome for years, and now the courts are listening. Dr. Kurt Miceli, chief medical officer of Do No Harm, praised the move, according to the Daily Signal. The stakes here are life and death, or at least a lifetime of regret and physical complications.
The Facts Behind the Settlement
The New York Times reported that the DOJ announced settlements with Texas Children’s Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Mount Sinai Health System, New York University Langone Hospital, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Children’s Hospital. Although they admitted to no wrongdoing, these institutions reached separate agreements to halt the procedures and pay certain federal fines.
The terms of the deal are strict. Several of the hospitals will even provide free medical care to former patients who wish to detransition as part of the individual agreements. This acknowledges the reality that these interventions often lead to significant harms, including infertility, cardiovascular disease, and surgical complications. Will Hild, executive director of Consumers’ Research, stated that “nonprofit hospitals that embrace a radical political agenda over their core mission of patient care must be held accountable.”
The reporting highlights that these hospitals had been pushing “gender-affirming” care despite a lack of credible evidence. Dr. Miceli pointed out that there is a lack of credible evidence supporting these interventions. He also added that no child should be exposed to so-called ‘gender-affirming’ care and the irreversible effects that many of these interventions can have.
Here in New York, we see Mount Sinai and NYU Langone on this list. That means our local health giants are being told to stop experimenting on kids. It’s a wake-up call for a city that often treats its children as political pawns. We don’t need “woke” hospitals putting ideology ahead of patient safety. When you look at the numbers, the known harms are too significant to ignore.
This settlement sends a clear message: the federal government will not allow political agendas to override medical ethics. It stops the spread of a dangerous precedent where the state decides a child’s gender identity over their parents’ wishes. As Mark Trammell of the Center for American Liberty noted regarding similar policies elsewhere, it is a “wicked presumption” to assume parents are abusive and the state is all-knowing.
