Our city is supposed to be safe for everyone, especially our elders, but that promise got broken in Inwood earlier this week. An 83-year-old woman was targeted in her own apartment building by a predator who followed her inside and tried to force his way in. The NYPD is now asking New Yorkers to help catch this guy before he hurts someone else.

Detectives in Manhattan are working hard to identify the suspect who committed this heinous act on Monday, Oct. 26. The attack happened at 8:55 a.m. near the corner of Vermilyea Avenue and West 204th Street. Law enforcement sources say the man followed the victim into the building and confronted her as she tried to unlock her front door. He exposed himself and made sexual advances while trying to get inside her home.

The Suspect Description and Escape

The 34th Precinct got a call about the incident and responded quickly. The victim managed to fight off her attacker during a brief physical struggle, which is proof of her courage. After the struggle, the suspect ran away on foot into the neighborhood. EMS units treated the woman at the scene for minor injuries, and she is recovering. Police released security camera footage and images of the suspect on Thursday night to help the public identify him. A black-and-red backpack is carried by a man in the footage who has a dark complexion, a goatee, and wears a black du-rag, black jacket, black pants, and gray shoes.

What We Know So Far

We need to rely on the facts provided by the NYPD and reported by outlets like amNewYork. The suspect is currently at large, and the investigation is ongoing. Police sources confirmed that the man followed the victim specifically to her apartment. He tried to force entry, which shows premeditation and danger. The NYPD has not yet released a name for the suspect because they do not have enough information to identify him. The department is urging anyone who recognizes the man from the video to come forward immediately.

New Yorkers Must Stay Vigilant

This is exactly the kind of crime that makes us all feel uneasy in our own neighborhoods. We love this city, but we cannot let fear take over. The victim did the right thing by fighting back, but she should not have had to face this alone. We need more eyes on the street and a community that looks out for its seniors. The NYPD is doing its job by releasing the video, but they need our help to find this pervert. If you see this man, do not wait. Call it in.

Anyone with information on where this suspect might be hiding should call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS. You can also submit tips online at crimestoppers.nypdonline.org or via X at @NYPDTips. All calls and messages are kept confidential to protect the person providing the tip. We need to get this guy off the streets so he cannot hurt another senior citizen in New York.

The next step is for the community to provide leads that lead to an arrest. There is no specific court date or hearing scheduled yet since the suspect has not been caught. The focus right now is on the investigation and public awareness. We will update you as soon as the 34th Precinct has more news on this case.
