A Brutal Attack on the Upper East Side

New Yorkers are sick of watching violent criminals walk free while victims suffer in agony. This week, a drunken homeless man savagely slashed a rival at a grocery store on the Upper East Side, leaving the victim’s intestines hanging out in the street. Despite the horrific nature of the attack, a judge freed the accused immediately. This is exactly the kind of failure that makes people feel unsafe in their own neighborhoods.

What the Court Documents Reveal

According to reporting from the New York Post, the fight broke out around 10 p.m. Tuesday at Fresh Food Farm on East 69th Street and Second Avenue. Police say Antonio Bonifacaio, 34, pulled a box cutter and sliced a man, leaving a six-inch cut on his abdomen with “his intestines protruding out,” according to a criminal complaint. In critical condition, the victim was sent to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center with cuts on his hands.

During Bonifacaio’s arraignment on charges of first-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon, prosecutors requested a $200,000 bond or $100,000 cash bail. Police found an orange boxcutter in Bonifacaio’s right back pants pocket. Bonifacaio pleaded not guilty, and Judge Sheridan Jack-Browne released him on his own recognizance. His next court date is in November.

Why This Release Makes No Sense

This ruling is a slap in the face to every law-abiding New Yorker who worries about their safety. A man allegedly used a deadly weapon to gut another human being, and the result was a release without any money on the line. The judge, a Democrat who won a special election in 2025, apparently decided that the risk to the public was zero. That is a dangerous gamble with lives.

We’ve seen this movie before. The system prioritizes the comfort of the accused over the safety of the community. Bonifacaio is homeless, as is his alleged co-conspirator Eddy Idrovo Chamba, 25, who was also charged with assault. Yet, the person who allegedly held the blade walks free. As the victim lies in the hospital recovering from surgery, the attacker is back on the streets. This sends a clear message that violence has no consequences in this city.

People are tired of the excuses. We need judges who understand that a man with a box cutter and a history of violence is not a minor risk. Releasing someone who allegedly left intestines exposed without bail is not justice; it is negligence. New Yorkers deserve a legal system that protects them, not one that lets them down every time a violent crime occurs.

Next Steps for the Case

The legal process moves forward, but the danger remains. Bonifacaio’s next court date is scheduled for November. Until then, he is free to roam the city while the victim fights for his health. We will be watching to see if the judge realizes the gravity of this situation or if she continues to let violent offenders off the hook.
