A 14-year-old boy is fighting for his life after falling from a moving train in Williamsburg, a stark reminder of the deadly subway surfing trend.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is taking aggressive steps to stop Immigration and Customs Enforcement from operating in our streets, and it looks like he might be crossing a legal line. Federal law doesn’t force us to cooperate, but the mayor is now actively working to block it, turning a blind eye to criminals while threatening private businesses that try to help.

This isn’t just about policy differences; it’s about a draft letter sent to garage owners that reads more like a threat than a request. Mamdani is telling private lot owners to shut their doors to federal agents, and anyone who knows how City Hall operates knows there are consequences for ignoring the mayor’s wishes.

The Letter That Sounds Like a Threat

A draft letter from the mayor’s office, per New York Post reporting, requested that owners of city garages and parking lots prevent the agency from utilizing their property. In the text, Mamdani implores them to “Make it known to ICE that it is not authorized to use your garages and lots.”

This isn’t friendly advice. The report indicates that any mayoral letter directed at a private business carries an implicit threat of City Hall disfavor for those who disobey him. The mayor warns that allowing ICE access risks “placing your property, your employees, and your customers at the center” of operations he claims have “terrified and terrorized local communities.”

Ignoring the Reality of Crime

This move comes right after the arrest of illegal immigrant Oscar Belgal in the Bronx, which sparked outrage over the location where ICE agents staged their operation. Instead of firing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch as some progressive allies demanded, Mamdani is throwing them a different bone by targeting the infrastructure ICE uses.

The mayor is essentially telling the private sector to become accomplices in hiding criminals. While he presents this as community protection, the New York Post contends such actions dangerously approach outright obstruction of justice. By cutting off access to staging grounds, he makes it harder for federal agents to do their jobs while exposing business owners to potential protests and regulatory scrutiny.

A Pattern of Distracting from Real Safety Issues

While Mamdani focuses on blocking ICE, he is also directing the NYPD to “conduct a comprehensive review of its use-of-force policies and practices.” He declared that “Every New Yorker deserves to know that force will be used lawfully, carefully and only when necessary,” implying the current police force is somehow out of control.

But the numbers tell a different story. During the initial six months of this year, officers discharged firearms only 23 times even though they arrested more than 24,000 suspects armed with weapons. With fewer than 6,000 total use-of-force incidents logged by the department, deadly force occurred in no more than 0.02% of arrests. Yet the mayor adds $2.6 million to oversight efforts and pushes reforms that ignore these facts.
