New York City FC is stuck in neutral, and the fans in Queens are paying the price. On Sunday, the home team managed to tie Los Angeles FC in a game that felt more like a timeout than a match. This 1-1 draw at Citi Field is just another ugly chapter in a season that has seen the team win only one of its last 12 league games.

The atmosphere was flat, with a large crowd that seemed half-hearted even when Son Heung Min was on the pitch. It was nothing like the electric energy we saw with Messi, and for good reason. The product on the field has been desperately dull, and the result reflects the inertia that has gripped Pascal Jansen’s squad for months.

A Drab Performance in Queens

The game started poorly for the home side when Leo Walta scored a free kick just before halftime. The ball drifted past Matt Freese, who seemed frozen in place despite the shot not being particularly powerful. Freese was not unsighted, yet he remained rooted as the ball found the bottom corner from 30 yards out. This error bookended a first half where neither team could create anything of note.

Andrés Perea did give the home fans a brief moment of hope with a thumping header midway through the second half, but it was not enough. The team dominated possession and territory but failed to convert any of it into a victory. Pascal Jansen did not mince words after the final whistle regarding his team’s inability to close out the game.

The manager’s frustration was evident as he highlighted the specific failures that cost them three points against a team that has also struggled to win on the road.

The Playoff Picture Fades

This result is a massive blow to NYCFC’s chances of snatching a playoff spot. With each passing week, their window to secure a postseason berth is closing. Since July, the MLS has seen no home victory for this team, and they clearly lack momentum. While Red Bull New York also stumbled in a 2-0 loss to Toronto, NYCFC’s lack of goals remains the primary issue.

Jansen made it clear that scoring is the only way out of this slump. “We need wins and in order to win, you need goals,” he added, according to amNewYork. The team cannot rely on defensive heroics or lucky breaks if they want to climb the table. The current form suggests a long, painful road ahead for a franchise that once promised more.

The next test for NYCFC will be critical.
