A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in South Richmond Hill on Wednesday when a Queens mother called 911 to confess she had killed her own 5-year-old daughter. Francis Cabello, who had recently stopped taking her mental health medication, was arrested at the scene after police found her daughter, Fabiana, unconscious and unresponsive inside their apartment.

The family is now grappling with the loss of a little girl who was described as happy and energetic, while the community tries to make sense of how a protective mother could turn violent. According to law enforcement sources, Cabello made a chilling admission to the dispatcher, stating simply, “I killed my daughter,” before officers arrived to find the child in critical condition.

A Family in Shock and Confusion

Neighbors and family members are struggling to reconcile the woman they knew with the actions she took. The Cabello family had been living quietly in the neighborhood, with residents describing them as friendly and kind. “They’re very quite nice family,” one local resident said, expressing the collective disbelief rippling through the area, according to the New York Post.

Her father, Franklin Cabello, was home at the time of the incident and noticed something was deeply wrong before the police stormed the apartment. He had been trying to monitor his daughter’s mental health after she stopped her medication, fearing the consequences of her spiraling condition. According to reports, who was at home, he knew mentally she wasn’t 100% there. Noting that “When a person stops taking medicine for the sickness that she had, the person is going to suffer,” he stressed she was normally a protective mother who would never intentionally harm her child, according to the New York Post.

Despite his efforts to keep an eye on her, the situation escalated rapidly. “I was paying attention because she was already acting strange,” he said, revealing that she had been hospitalized just three months prior for her psychological issues. The father expressed his devastation, stating, “The family is distraught,” as they face the unimaginable reality of losing Fabiana to her own mother’s untreated illness.

Neighbors Recall a Happy Child

The scene outside the apartment on 110th Street was chaotic as emergency responders worked to save the young girl. Fabiana was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead despite the best efforts of the medical team. While the city’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine her cause of death, the immediate circumstances suggest a violent end.

Neighbors watched in horror as Cabello was taken into custody. She appeared eerily calm during the arrest, showing no signs of the emotional breakdown one might expect. “She was not crying, it was like nothing happened,” recalled neighbor Carlos, who identified himself as he watched the mother being carted away in handcuffs, according to the New York Post. He added, “It’s too much emotions together. I feel sad for the child,” remembering Fabiana as a bubbly kid who loved to give hugs.

Erika Santiago, a licensed practical nurse living across the street, heard the commotion and the “lot of yelling” before the emergency response began. She expressed her shock to the press, saying, “I heard about this when I woke up this morning at 6 o’clock and it’s absolutely devastating, devastating.” For her, the tragedy hit close to home, noting, “And it’s right across the street and they brought her to the hospital I work at. It’s so close to home.”

A Community United in Grief

The bond between neighbors in South Richmond Hill is being tested by this event, yet many are stepping up to support one another. Residents described a sense of shared loss, feeling as though the community itself has been injured. “When you living in together in one area, we feel like it’s a family, together, community, there,” they said, highlighting the tight-knit nature of the block.

While Francis Cabello remains in police custody and faces pending charges, the focus for now is on the memory of Fabiana and the support for her grieving family. The tragedy is a grim reminder of the critical importance of mental health treatment and the devastating consequences when that care is interrupted. As the investigation continues, the community waits for answers while mourning a life cut tragically short.
